The Wave
2005
oil charcoal on canvas
48 x48
The series is personal ode to Hokusai - an ethereal surfer's mantra. A response, non- photographic and mnemonic, to the surf cliché and surf imagery bombardment.

For each series of paintings, successive studies were done, on location. Larger works were completed in the studio. All begin on location.
Most of this series (sand, salt, acrylic, oil with charcoal) were actually started on the beach in the wind and rain. The environment is allowed to play an intrinsic part, imposing itself on the material and a somewhat athletic process. The canvas is often turned in various directions to allow the effects of the sand and sea to take an active role in the direction and development of the paintings. Sea water is poured and splashed onto the beginning stages, obscuring some passages while creating others. The sea and rain washed away areas of paint while creating new opportunities to exploit that once back in the studio will be further developed.
